Team Italia

Team Italy

The Italians were nothing if not determined to have a presence at WAC XVIII. First there was a major policial turmoil to overcome, tremendous logistical concerns, then Sergio Dallan, their lead pilot strained a foot in an unrelated training accident, and was be unable to fly. As Luca Salvadori notes at the bottom of the page, the effort paid off: the Italian mens' team placed fourth at WAC XVIII.

Italia takes Fourth at WAC XVIII! (from Luca Salvadori)

Maybe no one has noticed it under the bright light of the winners, but Italy has scored 4th place in Male Teams ranking. Team score has been composed by individual results of Fabio VIVIANI (28th overall), Renzo VOCERI (41st overall) and Andrea FOSSI (42nd overall), flying respectively CAP-231EX and CAP-231. Fabio VIVIANI also was awarded 10th overall in program #2 (Freestyle), surpassing many other seasoned pilots.

This achievement is the best so far in WAC history for Italy, and is very important if you consider that the top-scoring teams (Russia, France and USA) are largely composed by aerobatic professionals with plenty of resources and time to practice, as well as the best aircraft on the scene. Italian Team, meanwhile, is composed by peoples with their own work, devoting only their free time to aerobatics: key factor this year has been the practice period (2 weeks) spent by the Team in Duncan - OK before the Contest, where all pilots flew 3 or 4 flights per day under trainers' eye, steadily improving quality of flight and physical fitness toward the goal.

Also, Italy has been the 3rd among European Teams: a good passport to EAC'97, confirming the bright Bronze Medal of EAC'93 in Grosseto. Thanks to all friends, both in Italy and in USA, which helped Italian Team to be so successful at XVIII World Aerobatic Championships. Hope to do even better...
