Oklahoma City Picked for World Aerobatic Championship

Oklahoma City--Oklahoma City has been chosen by the Commission Internationale de Voltige Aerienne (CIVA), headquartered in Paris, France, as the site of the 1996 World Aerobatic Championships. The international aviation competition will be held August 18 - 30, 1996 at Oklahoma City's Clarence E. Page airport.

Normally held in Europe, this will be the first time in sixteen years the contest has been conducted in the United States. The site selection was announced by CIVA President, Mike Heuer on November 5, at the annual meeting in Orlando, FL. CIVA is a division of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) which boasts membership of several dozen nations and is responsible for certifying aeronautical and space records throughout the world.

Named as Director of the XVIII World Aerobatic Championships is Carl Whittle of Norman, OK. At least sixteen countries have already indicated that they will send teams to Oklahoma City to participate in the championships. Many of the teams will arrive a week early to begin practice prior to the two weeks of intense competition." Whittle said.

The beautiful, high performance competition aircraft will be crated and shipped from as far away as Russia to be assembled, fine tuned and flown for the coveted Gold, Silver and Bronze World Championship medals.

The Oklahoma City All Sports Association will sponsor the 18th World Championships, according to Association President John Philbin. "We are delighted that CIVA has placed their confidence in Oklahoma City and the All Sports Association to host this prestigious world sporting event" Philbin said.

The Oklahoma delegation to CIVA, made up of John Philbin, Kathy Jones, Director of the Aerospace America International Air Show and Carl Whittle, air show operations director, reported that the success of the Oklahoma City proposal is attributed to the city's easy access by the international community through it's Will Rogers World Airport, the convenience of excellent hotels close to both airports, the great Oklahoma flying weather and the outstanding facilities at the city owned Clarence E. Page airport. The record of the Oklahoma City All Sports Association as the sponsor of the award winning Aerospace America International Air Show was a key element in the selection of the Oklahoma site.

Aviation enthusiasts from across the United States and Canada are expected to Travel to Oklahoma City to attend the 18th World Aerobatic Championship to watch the fierce competition for the titles of Men's and Women's World Aerobatic champion as well as the national World Team Championship.

Tickets and sponsorship information is available through the Oklahoma City All Sports Association office by calling 1-800-434-5000.
